Puppy Play Biting

🦷 Puppy Teeth Got You Saying “Ouch!”? Let’s Talk Play Biting! 🐾

Ahhh, those tiny shark teeth—so cute… until they’re chomping on your fingers like you’re the main course. 😅

If you’ve recently welcomed a puppy into your home, you’ve probably discovered that play biting is a very real part of puppyhood. Don’t worry—this phase is totally normal. Puppies use their mouths to explore the world, learn boundaries, and interact with their humans. That said, it doesn’t mean you have to be their chew toy!

Here are a few quick tips to help you survive the teething trenches and teach your pup better habits:

🧸 1. Redirect the Chomp

Always keep a few soft or rubber toys nearby. When your puppy starts going for your hands, calmly swap them out for something more appropriate. Praise them when they chew on the toy instead of you!

🗣️ 2. Give a Yelp

It might feel silly, but letting out a quick “yelp!” (just like one of their littermates would) can stop them in their tracks. This mimics natural puppy feedback and helps teach bite inhibition.

🚫 3. Pause the Fun

If the biting continues, end playtime for a minute or two. Puppies quickly learn that gentle play = more fun, while biting = game over.

🐶 Patience + Consistency = Progress

Puppy teeth are sharp, but thankfully, they don’t last forever. Stick with it, stay consistent, and remember—your sweet pup is learning more every day.
