Why We Don’t Line Breed at Dacus Doodles
🚫 Why We Don’t Line Breed at Dacus Doodles
One of the most important parts of being an ethical breeder is making thoughtful decisions that put the health and long-term well-being of our puppies first. At Dacus Doodles, we are often asked how we choose which dogs to pair together and why we make certain decisions.
A recent question came up about the possibility of pairing Phoenix and Fritz in the future. While both are absolutely beautiful and promising dogs, the answer is simple: we will not breed them. The reason is that they share the same father, Maverick.
What Is Line Breeding?
Line breeding is a form of inbreeding where two dogs that are closely related are intentionally bred together. This can include siblings, a parent and offspring, or dogs that share one parent, like Phoenix and Fritz.
Some breeders use line breeding to try to "lock in" desirable traits like coat type or structure. However, doing this also increases the risk of passing along genetic issues and can limit genetic diversity over time.
Why We Avoid Line Breeding
At Dacus Doodles, health and temperament come first. We choose to avoid line breeding because we want our puppies to have the best possible start in life. That means reducing the risk of inherited health problems and ensuring strong, diverse genetics.
By carefully selecting pairings with compatible traits and no close relation, we are able to:
-
Support healthy immune systems
-
Preserve strong structure and sound temperament
-
Avoid compounding genetic risks
